    Masterstudiengang Nachhaltiger Tourismus

    Die Fachbereiche Wirtschaft und Landschaftsnutzung/Naturschutz der Fachhochschule Eberswalde bieten gemeinsam den Studiengang "Nachhaltiger Tourismus" an, der in zwei Jahren zum Abschluss "Master of Sustainable Tourism Management" führt.

    Nachhaltige Universität Helsinki

    An der Universität in Helsinki wurde in einem einjährigen Projekt von Studierenden und Beschäftigten versucht, einen Nachhaltigkeits- und Umweltplan für die Uni zu entwickeln.
    In dieser Adresse gibts viele internationale Links zu Umweltprojekten und umfangreiche Literaturangaben.
    Neu: Die Arbeiten an der Universität Helsinki werden seit 1999 weitergeführt von der Umweltbeauftragten, Frau Virpi Pyy. Einige Informationen auf englisch finden Sie unter www.tekn.helsinki.fi/ymparisto/summary.htm. Dort ist auch der Umweltbericht 2000 verfügbar.

    Greening the Agricultural University of Norway

    Die Universität beteiligt sich an einem landesweiten Programm für umweltfreundliche öffentliche Einrichtungen ("Green State Bodies") und führt von November 1998 bis Dezember 2000 das Projekt "Greening NLH" durch. Nach einer Stoff- und Energieflußanalyse der Hochschule wurde 1999 ein "Action plan" aufgestellt und verabschiedet, der 20 Teilprogramme enthält. Ziel ist es, die umweltfreundlichste Universität Norwegens zu werden.

    Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability (HEPS)

    The Higher Education Partnership (HEPS) is a pioneering collaboration between Forum for the Future and 18 UK universities and colleges. The purpose of the partnership is to help them deliver their own strategic objectives through positive engagement with the sustainable development agenda. This initiative will also generate the transferable tools, guidance and inspiration to encourage the rest of the higher education sector to do likewise.
    A three-year UK-wide initiative, the HEPS began in 2000 with farsighted financial support from the Higher Education Funding Councils of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
    Universities and colleges have a significant contribution to make towards sustainable development as:
    • major businesses where prudent resource use not only saves money but safeguards reputations
    • places of learning and research forming and informing the leaders and decision-makers of the future
    • key members of the local community as employer, purchaser and amenity provider with a major impact on the wider world of influential ideas and technological development

    Greening University of Florida

    An der University of Florida arbeitet eine Gruppe von Studierenden, Wissenschaftlern und Verwaltungsangehörigen am Projekt "Green UF", das sich auf die drei Bereiche Lehre, Forschung und Betrieb bezieht.     Greening the Campus: Institutional Environmental Change at Tulane University

    An der University of Tulane wurde von einem Studenten ein Modell entwickelt, um einen Weg aufzuzeigen, "how to change an institution of higher education and include environmental concerns into its mission (education, research and operations). The document itself provides a wealth of information, ideas, resources and arguments that can be helpful to others trying to make institutional environmental change (i.e., to green their institutions). Although a case study of Tulane, the models, infomation, ideas and conclusions are relevant for any institution, higher education or otherwise."     The George Washington University Center on Sustainability & Regional Growth (CSRG) seeks to bring together a variety of disciplines throughout the University to "better understand and manage growth and to prepare for a more sustainable future."
    This goal is pursued through conferences, trainings, partnerships, and direct projects, and collaboration with citizens, communities, and policymakers, as well as partnerships with the Brookings Institution, the Mortgage Bankers Association, the Funders' Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities, the State Department, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. As one of its major public events, the CSRG sponsored a one-day conference "Smart Growth and the Law" in 1999.

    Sustainable Development Program & Sourcebook

    The website mentioned is the online sourcebook for sustainable development of the Washington State University's Sustainable Development Program (WSUSDP) housed at the WSU College of Business and Economics. It was begun in 1996 as an interdisciplinary program with a grant from the Trillium Corporation. Trillium Senior Vice President Jean Gorton, a WSU alumna, has been on loan to WSU as an adjunct faculty member charged with building the Sustainable Development Program. In 1998 it received a "$200,000 gift by Crown Pacific Partners of Portland, Ore. ? to launch the development of a distinguished Chair and establishment of an international institute".

    Sustainability Task Force

    he Humboldt State University Sustainability Task Force is made up of people representing all parts of campus and focuses on encouraging the university to adopt policies geared towards resource conservation and policy.
    It was started in the fall of 1996, involving 25-30 students, and supporting faculty, staff and administrators. Recent accomplishments include getting 100% of all (pre-consumer) food waste diverted to a composting site in Arcata, serving locally grown organic food on campus, getting the university to remove parking and create a 'pedestrian zone' along the main artery into campus, and convincing the administration to look into having an ISO 14000 environmental audit done.

  • The New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability (NJHEPS), USA
    The New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability encompasses 16 institutions of higher education in New Jersey, among them are Drew University, Kean University, Princeton University, Rutgers University, and the non-profit Second Nature. It is the first state-based effort of its kind in the United States, and its organizers hope it serves as a model for other states. Its mission is "to make our campuses become the models for sustainability which we believe they must ultimately become." This means to seize the "opportunity to begin undoing past environmental damage and implementing sustainable practices."

  • North Carolina State University, USA
    Environmental Sustainability at NC State

    The creation of the Environmental Sustainability Program at NC State has been stimulated by an initiative of Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. in September 1999. He committed all public agencies in North Carolina to the development and implementation of a state strategic plan for environmental sustainability.
    To coordinate North Carolina State University's response to that charge, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox appointed a campus-wide sustainability officer, who, in turn, created a Environmental Sustainability Task Force. It was selected to provide broad-based representation with more than 20 members from the Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, Student Senate, Physical Environment Committee, several colleges, and several administrative offices.

  • Carnegie Mellon University, USA
    Green Design Initiative

    Carnegie Mellon University began a campus-wide Green Design Initiative in 1992 to promote environmentally conscious engineering, product and process design, manufacturing, and architecture. The initiative involves forming partnerships with industrial corporations, foundations, and government agencies to develop joint research and education programs, which improve environmental quality while encouraging sustainable economic development.
    The initiative is organizing the "Green Design Consortium", which is a cost-sharing mechanism for companies to participate in the research programs of the Green Design Initiative. Current Consortium members include BOSCH, IBM, Texaco, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, XEROX, and others.

    Center for a Sustainable Future

    This institution is closely affiliated with scientists in the University of Hawaii and is dedicated to formulating and carrying out applications of their environmental research. The Center for a Sustainable Future (CSF) is designed as a private institution with the goal of bringing together scientists, engineers, and economists to address long-range technological issues arising from the need to achieve sustainable development. The focus of the center will be on Hawaii, the tropical Pacific and the Pacific Rim.

    Center for Sustainable Systems

    The Center for Sustainable Systems at the University of Michigan grew out of the National Pollution Prevention Center (NPPC), which was established in 1990 at the University of Michigan. The NPPC represents a collaborative effort between business and industry, government, non-profit organizations, and academia. Its purpose is to collect, develop, and disseminate educational materials on pollution prevention. In 1999 the Center for Sustainable Systems (CSS) was launched as an evolution of NPPC. It seeks to facilitate sustainability by supporting better informed decisions and actions by individuals, consumers, business and industry leaders, and policy makers.

    Sustainable Development Research Institute

    The Sustainable Development Research Institute (SDRI) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, was established in April 1991. The Institute encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among the faculty, departments and centres at UBC, as well as other institutes and programs undertaking sustainable development research in Canada and around the world.
    Among other tasks, the Institute seeks to develop research "tools" including modeling, gaming and systems of measurement that provide users with the capability to make up their own minds about the complex issues surrounding sustainable development. It fosters multi-stakeholder and collaborative research processes and workshops to put current understanding from the research community in the hands of the user community.

  • Virtual University for Sustainability - WBCSD, USA
    The Virtual University has been developed by the Foundation for Business and Sustainable Development, the educational arm of the WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development) in cooperation with Virtual Learning Partners and the University of Cambridge. Its purpose is to develop a virtual resource center in the field of environment, resource efficiency and social development to enable an operational understanding of sustainable development. It is designed to pass on the experience, knowledge, and expertise which larger corporations have established in the field sustainability to small and medium sized companies who lack the expertise and time to acquire such knowledge elsewhere.

  • University of Westminster, UK
    Centre for Sustainable Development

    In 1998, the University of Westminster established a Centre for Sustainable Development (CfSD), a collaboration between the Transport Studies Group, the Environment Resource and Information Center, the Department of Estate Management and the Department of Planning and Urban Design. The CfSD, thus, tries to integrate environment, transport, planning and property perspectives on sustainability within one team. "Other groups in architecture, housing and construction have joined suit, while colleagues in the business disciplines are equally committed." The website does not, however, provide further information about projects or publications of the CfSD.
